I'm SO glad, because all of my necklaces and earrings were tangled in a big mess from the move, and it was taking me forever to find anything.

I found a plain unfinished wood frame at Hobby Lobby, painted it black and added polyeurethane to make it shiny. Then I used my trusty staple gun and stapled down some window screen netting. To prevent earrings from scratching the wall behind, I glued down some fabric in the back--this was actually Jeremy's idea, so he gets the credit. (Yes, that is the same Amy Butler fabric from Abby's kindergarten graduation dress. I still love it and had the perfect size scrap for this.) Then I added some hooks along the bottom and sides for necklaces. Loving my newfound organization!

This is the nightgown I made as the tester. We love how it turned out, but it was way too big (1st picture) so we added some ribbon ties in the back and now it's just right. So fun to have a twirly nightgown--and half of it is flannel so it's extra warm!

This latest project is something I've wanted to do for awhile but I finally found the fabric and the time to do it!

I like this Ikea chair that I've had for a few years, but it was feeling a little too boring.

I found enough of my favorite Joel Dewberry Ginseng fabric to make new cushion covers for it. I have loved this fabric since I first laid eyes on it--it just makes me happy. And it works with my new love of orange and
aqua.

I didn't have a pattern--just took measurements from the existing covers and attempted to wing it. It's not perfect, by any means. I wasn't ambitious enough to do zippers that large, so I made the openings envelope style (like on pillow covers) and sewed on velcro. Works like a charm and it was quite easy. Next up...some coordinating throw pillows.Shaunihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04190916516819305525noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2413346177076705973.post-58527150335792755442010-04-12T14:05:00.000-07:002010-04-12T14:09:14.745-07:00Custom ordersHere are a few custom orders I've done lately. Abby's dance teacher, Miss Cindy, asked me to make a jacket to go with her daughter's Prom dress. I was very nervous to sew something so fancy--I definitely didn't want her to look "homemade" for Prom! The pattern they wanted me to use was cute but old and the instructions were goofy, so I had to improvise. I used some skills I learned making the jackets for me and Abby. I made a practice jacket first out of some ugly fabric I had in my stash. I think the finished product turned out pretty well--it looks really cute on her! It's a shorter, bolero style jacket with a really cute pleat detail on the sleeves. I told her I needed a picture of her on Prom night--I'll post it here when I get it.
I love bags--can't have too many!!

The first is from the BananaFana pattern "Megan's Bag." I made this one last summer and it's been at Gracie Lous until about a week ago when they let me take it home! This is a BIG bag and can hold pretty much everything, including the kitchen sink. We've discovered that it's perfect for everything we need for church, and it's not too girly (like some of my other bags) so Jeremy's okay with it when he has Sam. Love it...love the size, love the pockets (4 total) love the strap, love the big button. Love this Amy Butler home decor fabric from last year...which is sadly impossible to find these days.
This morning I counted up the number of entries everyone earned, wrote names on a piece of paper, cut them out, and put them in a Hello Kitty bowl. We mixed up the papers and my little Jimmy (age 3) drew the winners the good old fashioned way--no cheating involved, I promise. So, without further ado, here are the winners:

MARYLIN wins the hat!

CARAGIRL wins the earrings!

Winners, please send me an email at shaunihawkins@msn.com to claim your prize and talk details.

Everyone else who entered, you will receive a FREE GIFT with purchase in the shop!

Please keep checking back as we'll be adding new things soon. Or send an email if you'd like a custom item!
It's called My Fair Ladies...see the button link over on the right side of the screen?! We love to create so we thought this would be a fun outlet for the things we make. Lauralee is now even part of a pattern design company called Izzy and Ivy. She's AMAZING and has already written several patterns. We have a few of the Jack n Jill hats (her very own pattern) for sale in the shop. We only have a few items in the shop so far, but we'll add more soon and we're always up for custom creations. Let us know if there's something specific you'd like us to make! You can also check out things on this sewing blog for ideas. I haven't updated it in awhile but I will soon. I took a few months off from sewing after I had Sam, but now I'm back at it! :)

And as part of the My Fair Ladies shop launch, of course we need to have a giveaway! The first place WINNER will receive a custom made Jack n Jill hat from Lauralee's fabulous pattern! It will be made in the size and color you want--for you, a child, a friend, made to your liking! And the 2nd place WINNER will receive a cute pair of earrings!

I'm sure you're familiar giveaways, but since this is my very first ever giveaway, I'm making it up as I go. :)

1. 1 entry = Check out the shop and then come back and leave a comment here to let me know what you think.
2. 2 entries = Tell someone else (or lots of someone elses) about the shop and come back and leave a comment here to let me know who you told.
3. 3 entries = Put a link to the shop on your blog! If you already know how to do this, go right ahead. Here's what my fabulous sister Lindsey figured out: Right click on our MFL button over on the right side of the screen. Save the picture to your desktop. Click "Customize" at the top of your blog page and then click "Add a gadget." Click on the gadget that says "Picture." Type something like "My Fair Ladies Etsy Shop" in the "Title" line. Then put this in the link box: www.etsy.com/shop/MyFairLadies . Then "browse" to find the image on your computer and upload it to your link. Click Save, refresh your blog and see if the link works. If so, come back and leave a comment telling me the link is added!
4. 4 entries = Make a purchase from the shop and yes, leave a comment to let me know!

So, it looks like you have the possibility of earning up to 10 entries for the giveaway! Winner will be announced on Friday, March 12th!
Shaunihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04190916516819305525noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2413346177076705973.post-34045869632943046852009-08-16T15:39:00.001-07:002009-08-16T15:41:39.855-07:00Hard!This jacket was one of the hardest items I've ever made because it is so tailored! I had to unpick several seams to get them matched up correctly, but I finally finished and it's at the shop. It's faux double breasted but I didn't want to button it up and pop the buttons in my current pregnant state! :)

Shaunihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04190916516819305525noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2413346177076705973.post-56014859058341362582009-08-03T09:04:00.001-07:002009-08-03T09:16:34.570-07:00New itemsAbby was getting frustrated that everything I've been sewing lately goes straight to Gracie Lous for a few months and she hasn't gotten to wear anything. So a few Saturdays ago, we made her this skirt in time to wear to church the next day. I had won a charm pack (square cuts of fabric) of this fabric a few months ago and had just never used it. I discovered this fabulous Free pattern online http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/05/little-girls-patchwork-skirt.html. Here are a few more things I made for the shop. I love this jacket pattern by Make it Perfect--it is so perfect for Fall and wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Here is a dress from a pattern by Maw Bell Designs. I was in Gracie Lous one day and decided to try making this quilt for our baby boy. I had heard it was an easy pattern and I figured it would give me a good, slow project to work on this summer. While the boss was cutting my fabric, she said that the store would pay for the fabric if I would let them put it on display until the baby is born. Can't argue with that one! :) The only trick was that she likes to get the projects back quickly, so I had to get it done faster than I was planning. I was very nervous about committing my first quilt to being a store display, but I'm really happy with how it turned out and the ladies at Gracie Lous even liked it. It was my first time using spray basting--love it. First time using a water-soluble marking pen--love it. First time attempting machine quilting--not as hard as I thought it would be. I just had to baste the front and back pieces to the batting and then pin the strips and rick rack on where I had drawn the lines. Then I sewed straight lines VERY carefully so as not to get any bunches. For the rick rack I used a cute curvy stitch. I was very nervous for the binding part, but I read a few tutorials, and it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I machine sewed it on the front, and then did the hand binding on the back. I took it with me to do the hand binding part on our trip to Oregon this last weekend, and it made the long trip pass much more quickly. The final test was to see if it would hold up in the washer and dryer--to give it the homey quilted look and to make the strip edges fray. Hooray--it survived, binding and all! :) It's now hanging at Gracie Lous, and I'm planning to make a crib skirt and some other accessories with matching fabric. I'm getting more and more excited for this baby boy to come!

Here is a top I made for the shop--it actually matches the embellished jeans I did earlier. It's a Pink Fig pattern called the Mia Top. It actually fits Abby almost to her knees, but it's pretty cute--and I'm excited to see it with the jeans. I've gotten very frustrated trying to do shirring (the smocking on the top of the shirt) before, because my machine was just pulling the elastic thread so tight that it wouldn't shir right. But a lady at the Bernina store told me to try turning the screw on my bobbin case about a half a turn to see if that would help. Miraculously, that's all it took, and the shirring was SO easy this time!Shaunihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04190916516819305525noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2413346177076705973.post-4990609049609119632009-06-14T15:04:00.000-07:002009-06-14T15:15:59.771-07:00More projects Here's the Witch's outfit I made for display at Gracie Lous--it's quite the funny costume! But rather than boring people with them on the family blog, I've started this little corner of my world!

Gracie Lou's is a fabulous fabric store that's only about 7 minutes away from my house. My friend Lauralee was sewing some of their store samples, but since she is busy with new adventures in pattern designing, she has passed the "job" along to me. They give me the pattern and fabric for the item they want me to make, they display it in the store for awhile, and then it's mine to keep! Not a bad way to keep my sewing addiction alive. Here are a few things I've done so far. I also made a skirt for myself that I forgot to take a picture of, and I'm currently working on a Halloween outfit in Abby's size--I'll post pictures when I finish!

A simple summer dress--I cannot remember the pattern name!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345495418406333410" style="DISPLAY: block;
